Money Birthday Cake

This was a fun cake order that got me experimenting and trying lots of new things. The customer wanted a money-themed cake for her husband’s birthday and wanted it to serve 25. She also gave me a picture of a cake for inspiration. The cake is a tasty buttermilk devil’s food cake filled with cream cheese frosting and covered in homemade marshmallow fondant. The coins are gumpaste dusted with sparkly gold luster dust for a little shine. The $100 bills are fun edible images that I had printed.

This cake turned out to be a bit trickier than I anticipated, but I definitely learned lots of good lessons for next time. Happy Birthday!

Train Cake for a Birthday Boy

Here’s a cake I whipped up for my cute nephew. The only instructions were that it have blue on it, some kind of train, and be chocolate cake. The cake is a yummy buttermilk devil’s food cake, filled with fluffy chocolate frosting, and iced in vanilla buttercream.

I went with a cookie/candy train--just because I was afraid there might not be enough sugar content in the cake and frosting ;)

And, yes, my hands were tired after piping all that grass.

So, happy birthday, my friend! Hope you liked it!

Flowers for a Friend Birthday Cakes

Last week I had the pleasure of making some mini cakes for a friend from college for her birthday. She wanted 4 cakes with blue flowers on them. The cookies are white with an almond buttercream filling and a vanilla buttercream frosting. I will admit that when I made the 100 miniature royal icing flowers, I was sure they would completely cover the cakes. So, I didn’t pay much attention to my frosting color. As it turns out, I could have used about 75 more. Now I know! Sorry, dear friend, that the icing wasn’t a more pleasing color. All in all, I thought they turned out pretty sweet.

Four tiny cakes, each about 2.5 inches across.

A Bumblebee Transformer Cake

This weekend, I got to make a fun Bumblebee Transformer cake for my cute 4 year-old neighbor. I was more than a little intimidated by the prospect of sculpting Bumblebee out of gumpaste, but I think he turned out all right. And, yes, I chose to go with the retro/cartoon version. There’s no way I’d be able to sculpt the Bumblebee from the new movies! The cake itself was a full-size two layer snickerdoodle cake with lots of delicious cinnamon buttercream between layers and around the cake. It was covered with homemade marshmallow fondant. Yum!

Bumblebee, just chillin'.

Another angle.

So, happy birthday, my friend! I hope it was grand!

A “Prep and Landing” Birthday Cake

This year for his 4th birthday, my cute nephew wanted a Prep and Landing (the Disney short that came out this past December) party. What a fun theme! This is a delicious chocolate bundt cake with a batter full of chocolate chips. I also spread a thick layer of homemade peppermint buttercream frosting (complete with crushed peppermint candies!) in between the two layers of cake. I then frosted the cake with a divine chocolate buttercream and added fondant stripes and a mini candy cane border.

Unfortunately, my sculpting skills were depleted by the fact that both my little ones have had a stomach bug the past couple of days. Luckily, I don’t think this 4 year-old will mind the paper elves stuffed into peppermint candies :)

Happy Birthday!
